In 1919, the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad took delivery of (30) P-5 Pacific class locomotives; (20) from the Baldwin Locomotive Works, and (10) from Alco-Richmond Works. Compared to the other locomotives on the roster at the time, these P-5’s were considered “plush” having been equipped with power reversers, grate shakers and coal pushers on select tenders. Built with Baker valve gear, they sat on 73″ drivers and operated at 200 psi, producing 40,753 lbs of tractive effort. They were originally built without stokers, however they eventually received front-delivery stokers in 1940. Around the same time, (20) P-5’s were upgraded to Walschaerts valve gear and were reclassified as a P-5a class. All P-5’s and P-5a’s had their boiler pressures increased to 210 psi which increased their tractive effort to 42,200 lbs.
Unfortunately, none of the (30) P-5’s and P-5a’s were preserved. All were retired by 1956 and scrapped by 1959.
